Capability 06
Resilient & Off-Grid Digital Systems
We design digital systems to operate beyond reliable fixed infrastructure: systems that keep working through intermittent connectivity, remote locations and constrained power, and reconcile correctly when the link returns.
When this work is needed
The situations that bring a business to this capability.
- Assets, vehicles or vessels operate where cellular coverage is partial and satellite is expensive, and the system has to be useful the whole time.
- A site or a field team runs for hours or days without a connection to head office and the work cannot wait.
- A system was designed for the office network and fails, or loses data, whenever the network does.
- Distributed operations across regions need one coherent picture without depending on a single always-on link.
What we engineer
- 01Local-first architecture
- Systems that hold what they need locally, act locally, and treat the connection as an opportunity to synchronise rather than a requirement to function.
- 02Store-and-forward and synchronisation
- Buffering, prioritisation and replay of data across unreliable links, and the reconciliation rules that decide what wins when two sides changed while apart.
- 03Resilient communications
- Combinations of satellite, cellular and local networks with defined fallbacks, message budgets and behaviour under each degraded state.
- 04Edge compute and autonomous local operation
- Processing placed at the site, on the vehicle or on the gateway, so monitoring, control and decision support continue without the cloud.
Technical scope
The scope of a project is agreed in writing before work starts. These are the areas this capability normally covers.
- Off-grid and intermittent-connectivity operation
- Store-and-forward and message queuing
- Local-first data and synchronisation after reconnect
- Edge compute and gateways
- Isolated and segmented local networks
- Satellite, cellular and local-network combinations
- Remote monitoring of distributed assets
- Field systems and distributed operations
- Remote commissioning and support
Constraints we design for
- Assume the link is down
- The default state is disconnected. Every feature is specified for what it does offline, and connectivity improves the system rather than enabling it.
- Power and environment
- Remote hardware runs on limited power, in heat, cold, vibration and dust. Compute, storage and radio are chosen and duty-cycled for the site.
- Bandwidth is a budget
- Satellite and cellular cost by the byte. Data is prioritised, compressed and summarised at the edge, with the raw record kept where it was produced.
- Support at distance
- Sites are hard to reach. Diagnostics, remote update and recovery are designed in so that a visit is the last resort.
Where it applies
Sectors whose systems this capability is engineered for.
- Energy, Remote & Off-Grid Systems
Distributed assets that must keep operating despite connectivity, power and environmental constraints.
- Marine & Vessel Systems
Connected vessels, onboard networks, remote monitoring, owner and service systems, and the manufacturer's own systems behind them.
- Aerospace & Aviation
Systems where reliability, integration, operating constraints and distributed data all matter at once.
- Industrial IoT
Sensors, gateways, edge systems and telemetry feeding operational platforms and the business systems around them.

Discuss a project
If a product, operation or business system spans devices, software, data and real-world constraints, we can help define and engineer the system around it.
