Cayley Solutions

Digital systems built around real products and businesses.

We design and engineer custom digital products, connected systems and technology platforms for manufacturers, product businesses and specialist operators.

From embedded devices and edge intelligence to cloud platforms, applications and operational systems, Cayley works across the boundaries where technology has to function as one system.

Why Cayley Solutions

Software built around your product, not the other way round

Off-the-shelf software fits the average case. A connected product, a specialist operation or a system that has to work away from a reliable network is not the average case. We engineer the system your product and business actually need.

01Senior-led, end to end
The engineers who scope a system architect it and stay on it through validation. One team from the device to the business systems behind it.
02Tailored, not templated
Software is engineered around your product, operation and constraints. Where an existing platform already does the job, we integrate with it rather than rebuild it.
03Proven where it operates
High-risk assumptions are prototyped against real hardware and data first. The finished system is validated in the field, on the vessel or on the line.

The system

From physical product to application, across all seven layers

The OSI model (Open Systems Interconnection) is the classic seven-layer reference for how networked systems communicate, from the physical hardware at Layer 1 to the applications people use at Layer 7. A connected product or operation spans every one of them. We engineer across the boundaries between the layers rather than treating each as a separate software project.

    Application

The software people and business systems use: applications, APIs and the services behind them.

    • Owner, dealer and operator applications
    • Platforms, APIs and analytics
    • ERP, CRM, service and workflow systems

  2. L6

    Presentation

How data is represented so that both ends understand it: formats, schemas and encryption.

    • Data models and versioned contracts
    • Serialisation: JSON, Protobuf, CBOR
    • Encryption and schema evolution

    Integration & Data

  3. L5

    Session

How two endpoints establish, keep and end a conversation: identity, authentication and the channel between them.

    • Device identity and provisioning
    • Authentication, tokens and sessions
    • Command and control channels

    Connected Products

  4. L4

    Transport

Reliable end-to-end delivery of data, including ordering, retransmission and flow control.

    • TCP, UDP and QUIC
    • MQTT quality of service and retries
    • Store-and-forward and synchronisation

    Resilient SystemsConnected Products

  5. L3

    Network

Addressing and routing data between networks, wherever the endpoints are.

    • IP over cellular, satellite and LAN
    • Gateways and routing between sites
    • Degraded and offline operation

    Resilient Systems

  6. L2

    Data Link

Framing and error control on a single link: the local bus or radio link the device actually speaks.

    • CAN, NMEA 2000 and Modbus RTU
    • BLE, Wi-Fi and Ethernet link layers
    • Firmware, drivers and frame handling

    Edge & Applied AI

  7. L1

    Physical

The hardware and media that carry signals: the machine, its electronics, cabling and radio.

    • Machine, sensors and actuators
    • Controller boards and power
    • Cabling, antennas and RF front end

    Connected Products

Boundaries

Each gap between two layers is an interface: a protocol, a data contract, a failure mode and an owner. That is where the engineering happens.

Where we work

Distributed operations

Systems designed for where they actually operate

Products, assets and teams rarely sit on one network in one building. We design for the locations, links and borders the system will really cross.

Distributed products and assets
Fleets, vessels, vehicles and remote equipment report from wherever they are, over whatever link is available, into one coherent picture.
Intermittent networks
Systems are specified for what they do offline first. Connectivity synchronises; it does not enable.
International deployments
Regional cloud, local regulation, time zones and language are design inputs, not deployment surprises.
Remote commissioning and support
Diagnostics, update and recovery are built in so that a site visit is the last resort rather than the first.

How we work

From understanding to validation

Six stages, each with a defined output. High-risk assumptions are resolved before full implementation, and the finished system is validated where it will operate.

Read the approach

  1. 01

    Understand

Define the product, operational environment, user and real constraint.

  2. 02

    Architect

Define system boundaries, interfaces, data flows, technology and failure modes.

  3. 03

    Prototype

Resolve high-risk technical assumptions before committing to full implementation.

  4. 04

    Engineer

Build the product, software and underlying systems.

  5. 05

    Integrate

Connect devices, platforms, external systems and operational workflows.

  6. 06

    Validate

Test the complete system in the environment where it will actually operate.

Software engineering from Melbourne, for Australia and beyond

We build custom software and connected systems for businesses across Australia. From our Melbourne headquarters, we work with manufacturers and operators in Victoria and the Mornington Peninsula, as well as interstate and overseas teams.

Operations in Ireland, the USA and Australia support work across time zones. Our engineers bring more than three decades of experience to systems that connect devices, people and business operations.

About the practice and where we work

Discuss a project

If a product, operation or business system spans devices, software, data and real-world constraints, we can help define and engineer the system around it.
