About
A senior-led digital engineering practice
Cayley Solutions designs and engineers digital systems for businesses whose products and operations are physical, specialist or both. The work spans software, systems, devices, connectivity and operations, and it is led by the people who do it.
Three decades of engineering experience, across borders
Our work and experience span more than three decades, with customers around the world. Our main areas of activity are the USA, Central Europe, Ireland and the UK, the UAE, and Australia.
We operate from Ireland, the USA and Australia, with our headquarters in Melbourne, Victoria. We work with businesses across Australia, including Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, on custom software, connected products and systems integration.
Most software firms are organised around a medium: web, mobile, cloud, embedded. Cayley Solutions is organised around the system. A connected product, a dealer platform or a field operation only works when the device, the link, the platform, the application and the business systems behind it are engineered as one thing, and that is the work we take on.
The practice is senior-led. The people who scope a project architect it and stay on it through validation. We are deliberately multidisciplinary rather than large: the disciplines below sit in one team, so the boundaries between them are handled by people who understand both sides.
We are suited to technically complex and specialist environments: products with real physical constraints, operations that cannot stop for a software project, and systems that have to keep working away from a reliable network. We are not the right fit for a website, a brochure application or a project whose only requirement is to be cheap.
Disciplines
One team across the boundaries
- Embedded and device integration
- Controllers, sensors, buses and firmware-adjacent software.
- Connectivity and telemetry
- Radio, cellular, satellite and wired links, and what travels over them.
- Cloud platforms and APIs
- Services, data models, identity and the interfaces other systems use.
- Applications
- Web and mobile software for owners, dealers, operators and staff.
- Data and integration
- Pipelines, reconciliation and the joins to ERP, CRM and production systems.
- Operations
- Workflow, field and service systems, and the people who run them.
Deliberate scope
What we take on, and what we choose not to sell
Cayley Solutions is built for complex, custom engineering problems. Being clear about the work we decline is part of that: it keeps the practice focused and it keeps our advice honest.
Where Cayley fits
- Complex products
- Connected systems
- Embedded and edge systems
- Specialist platforms
- Difficult integrations
- Custom operational systems
- Unusual technical constraints
- Multi-system architecture
Where Cayley generally does not fit
- Commodity websites
- Template implementations
- Generic staff augmentation
- Routine IT support
- Problems an off-the-shelf product already solves well
- Rebuilds whose only purpose is to replace a functioning supplier
If we are not the right fit, we are happy to suggest colleagues and specialist providers from our network of trusted partners in Australia and the USA. We make these introductions free of charge.
What we don’t do
- 01We don't build commodity software
Cayley Solutions is generally not the right fit for brochure websites, template-based website projects, routine e-commerce implementations or straightforward application development where established off-the-shelf products already solve the problem well.
We focus on projects where the value lies in architecture, integration and engineering around a specific product, operation or technical constraint. A commodity component inside a larger system is a different matter: where a connected-product programme also needs a small marketing site, we can deliver or manage it as part of the whole. What we do not take on is commodity website development as the engagement.
- 02We don't replace good technology unnecessarily
Custom engineering is not automatically better. Where an established platform or existing supplier solves the requirement well, we would rather integrate with it than rebuild it.
Custom development should exist because the problem warrants it, not because we sell development hours.
- 03We don't treat every problem as a software problem
Some problems are better solved through process, configuration, integration or existing technology. We start with the system and the required outcome, not a predetermined technology stack.
- 04We don't outsource development offshore
We do not outsource development overseas, or engage, recommend, endorse or partner with offshore development outsourcing firms. Lower labour costs are not a substitute for engineering expertise or accountable delivery.
We support and encourage professional international and remote teams, and have extensive experience working with them. That means direct collaboration with qualified engineers, clear technical ownership and responsibility for the work delivered.
Not sure whether the project fits?
Complex projects do not always fit neatly into a service category. If the problem spans products, software, data, connectivity or operations, discuss it with us.
